Low Hanging Fruit Merlot (California)

Ok, so this one is a big-bottle budget wine that had a cute label. And by cute label, I really mean cute name. Because there isn’t a sales rep on the planet who can pass up anything that even remotely resembles low-hanging fruit – the deal you can close with little to no effort. It’s easy work, kinda like this wine. As a bonus, this Merlot was only $8 at HEB for 1.5L (the equivalent of two normal bottles), a great price.

This light red, almost russet colored wine smelled of smoke, dust, spice, and leather. It was light-bodied with mostly dusty-smoky taste, some berry flavors and a hint of oak. It was a really easy-drinking wine, perfect for a mid-week meal of lasagna or spaghetti. It was a bit different from most sub-$5 Merlots, what with the smoke flavor, but it wasn’t bad. I might like to try it sometime with a grilled cheese sandwich or a BLT. Might be fun.

Also, I completely forgot to take a photograph! Not so great a loss, but if I buy another bottle at some point in the future, I’ll grab a shot and post a picture. Or, you could go buy a bottle yourself and take your own snapshot.

    Hi Bobby,

I cannot for the life of me find a website, or any other reference to this wine. It's kinda blowing my mind.

If you are in Texas, you might find the wine itself at HEB. If you find it anywhere else, please drop a line and let us all know.

  3. bobby says:

I bought this wine in a White Zinfandel – I will only buy LHF from now on. It is the best Zinfandel on the market hands down. HEB has the best prices and they are stocked.

      Hi Maureen,

I’ve only ever seen Low Hanging Fruit at HEB, which is a Central Texas grocer. Couldn’t vouch for distribution in your neck of the woods, sadly. 🙁

I drink this all the time. One of my favoirite merlots. Can’t find one I like as well under $15 a bottle. 1.5 liters for $7.50. Their Chardonay and Cab is excellent too.

This is the second time that I have purchased this wine in the 1.5 liter bottle at Total Wine & More in Tustin, CA. They sell it for $4.99 a bottle and it is a very drinkable everyday wine. I did not realize that it is produced by E & J Gallo in Modesto. This is an upgrade from Two Buck Chuck at Trader Joes. The name caught my attention the first time I bought it.

Ephesians 5:18 (King James Bible) Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

    • Knighton says:

Agreed, better than Two-buck Chuck, which we can’t get in Texas, incidentally. Still – $4.99 for 1.5L is a ridiculously good deal for these!

I have a bottle of the sweet red. Its wayyyy to sweet for me. It tastes like cool-aid to me. Is the Merlot an easy drinking one? And would you say its a dry merlot or more on the sweeter side? I am looking for a new favorite wine. For 20 years I drank E & J’s Livingstone Cellars Burgandy. Loved It! until it started upsetting my stomach. I have tried countless bottles of TOO dry merlots and havent found a one i like to drink. Really miss my Burgandy….

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

Low hanging fruit is made by Gallo

  22. Robbie Laws says:

Low Hanging Fruit is NOT on the Gallo List of wines although Barefoot is listed there.
I am still searching for the vineyard that bottles this label. The Pinot Noir is my new favorite. I like it better than the Cabernet, which I’ve been drinking for years.
    Thanks for your blog.
